Maintaining Curly Hair
Although this might sound like a question destined for Cosmopolitan magazine, it isn't. The problem is, I hate my hair because it's curly, which causes it to puff up into what I like to call a "fro." So what can I do about it? Are there any products out there that can help me achieve a less "out of control" look? Or should I just straighten my hair?

My
friend, don't be so hard on yourself -- after all, you're lucky enough
to still have a full head of hair. You know, some guys would kill to
have your curls. But that's a whole other story for another article...
Below are some tips that will help you manage your curly hair, in style.
Before
we start, remember that you basically have two options: you can accept
your hair "as is," try the tips listed below and make the best of it,
or you can decide to straighten it.
Here are some suggestions to make your hair look flatter and under control.
Keep it short
The first tip is an obvious one, but it's often overlooked. Keeping
your hair nice and short at all times is a good idea because short
hairstyles are generally easier to maintain and style. A buzz cut is,
of course, the best solution.
Go long
If short hair is out of the question, here are a few tips on how you
can keep your curls from frizzing and eventually puffing up.
According to Ferdinando -- a professional hairstylist from Le Pascha
men's grooming center -- the best way to flatten your curly hair is to
cut it regularly, every four to six weeks. Good hairstylists will cut
your hair in different angles, which will make it "leaner" and remove
the excess volume.
He
also advises against blow-drying your hair because this tends to
inflate volume rather than reduce it. If you do blow-dry it, then do so
on a low setting while continually brushing your hair, for a straighter
and less voluminous look.
Another way to cut down
some of the volume is to reduce the overall amount of curls in your
hair, which is essentially a quick-fix technique, instead of fully
straightening your hair. Simply brush your hair and apply a bit of
hairspray while your hair is still wet. This will help you straighten
portions of your hair where you have a bit too much curl, which in turn
will help reduce your hair's overall volume.

My curly hair
by Michael from US, georgia, January 29, 2008
My hair is very poofy and very hard to manage. I was born with straight hair and it turned curly when i was about 7 or 8. I am mixed, half black and white, but my skin is very white.I have very light blonde hair and my its very hair to manage because of the color. The frizz is very whitish so i look like i'm albino. No matter what I use my hair never turns out how i wanted. I've tried gel, anti-frizz, conditioner, moose, everything and it seems like it doesn't do a thing. My hair gets all frizz and turns to a fro. I always want nice curls. I dye my hair brown so it won't be so hard to manage, but i am sick of it and i want to plan on making it blonde again. I really need advice and a way to make my hair look amazing. :D

Super Curly Hair?
by Zendrya from Malaysia, January 21, 2008
i got a curly hair which can short up my hair to 1/4 its length. Some myth said that if i cut it bald and let it grow again, the hair will grow up straight. Tried it and never happen. Now i go to the saloon to have the curly part at the top cut away and have only the bottom part which is not very curly. What else can i do? Please e-mail me for what should i do other than buying expensive shampoo and conditioner. Thank you.

how to flatten it
by sascha from berlin, January 16, 2008
I have had frizz all my life and yes it puffs up like I was Prof. Einstein after his painful discovery of the plug in the mornings. My suggestion don't ever cut it short. This is a quick fix and will only make things worse. The shorter you cut it the more frizz you will have. Use lots of conditioner at least once a week, use a flattening product, e.g. frizz ease every day, use plenty of grease (e.g. wax, coconut wax from swiss), use a round brush while blow drying and pull the hair with it whilst applaying the heat. sorry for my english...

Love My Curls
by Sir Michael from Utah, October 11, 2007
I have curly hair, and baldness runs in my family, so I figure I'll enjoy it while I have it. Right now it's 6-8inches long when pulled down, but the curls get tight enough that it's about 1/3 the length. I use a spray product that rhymes with "head bed" that reduces frizz makes each lock of hair its individual curl (which the ladies seem to adore) and I try to stick with shampoo/condit that also reduces frizz or hydrates the curls.
It's not too hard to manage after a week or so of using the product and you can shape it however you want, to go up like a fro or have your curls heavier and fall.

Sick of My Hair
by David from Florida, August 29, 2007
I deffinetely want to cut it and forget about it, but then again there are days when i wake up and my hair is not a fro, but exactly how I want it to be. I still don't know why my hair is so dry all the time since I put all the moisturaser I can find. I mean if Jim Morrison can get a great hair in one picture and a horrible fro in another he must have used something at one time and not at the other. Help. Anyone?

my hair..
by the juggernaught from earth, August 22, 2007
i have long curly hair down to the tops of my shoulders.
i find if i dont wash it as often, it doesnt fizz up. i think this is because washing it too often strips oils from my hair and that increases its volume, making it look dry, overly curly, and frizzy.
so if your having troubles with long curly hair try not to wash it as often, but that doesnt mean having oily dirty hair.
